There are five things to know about delta-8 THC to make sure
you and your loved ones are safe from products that could cause serious health
issues.
The FDA has not approved or evaluated delta-8 THC products
for safe use. They are also being marketed in ways that pose a risk to the
general public's health. The FDA has not reviewed them and cleared them to be
safe. There are concerns about the labeling and formulation of the products, as
well as the different cannabinoid, terpene and delta-8 THC levels.
Some products may be called "hemp products" which
could mislead people who mistakenly associate "hemp” with
"nonpsychoactive". FDA is also concerned about the growing number of
products that contain delta-8 THC. These products are being advertised for
therapeutic or medical purposes even though FDA has not approved them.
Unsubstantiated claims regarding products that have not been
approved by FDA for therapeutic benefits are not only illegal but also a
violation of Federal law. People could be at risk if the products are not
proven safe and efficient. The misleading marketing of treatments that have not
been proven effective poses serious health risks to the public as patients and
customers may use them instead of prescribed treatments for serious or fatal
diseases.
FDA received adverse reaction reports regarding drugs
containing delta-8 THC.FDA received reports about 104 adverse events in
patients who took delta-8 THC supplementation between November 1, 2021 and
February 28, 2022. Reports:
77% of the patients were adults. 8 percent were children
under 18 years of age, and 15% did not mention their age. 55% need intervention
(e.g. Assessment by emergency medical professionals or hospitalization.66% of
respondents experienced adverse reactions after eating delta-8 THC-containing
foods (e.g. brownies, brownies Gummies). Brownies, brownies, Gummies. 66% of
respondents reported adverse reactions to delta-8 THC-containing food items
(e.g. brownies).
Between January 1st 2021 and February 28th 2022, 2,362 cases
involving delta-8 THC were exposed by the National Poison Control Centers. The
date that delta-8 THC product codes were entered into this database. It was
February 28th 2022. These were the exposure cases reported:
58% of patients were adults. 41% of patients involved were
children under 18 years of age, while 1% did not have any age information. 70%
of patients needed evaluation at the hospital. 8 percent required admission to
a critical care unit. Children accounted for 45 percent of those who needed
health facility evaluations.A case of pediatrics was coded for an outcome of a
medical cause of death.
